The Core Wound Matrix: Escape This To Create Your Next Level Impact

In this article you’ll learn about the concept of a “core wound”…

How it holds us back,  puts blinders on us, and why we must integrate it in order for our missions to be successful out in the world.

Before I go any further I want to say that much of this content and my awareness around it was supported by the work of one my clients, friends, and mentors Jeffrey Van Dyk – who has an amazing body of work around healing core wounds, and using them as authentic fuel for marketing your body of work.

If you’d like to learn more about Jeffrey and his work visit Jeffreyvandyk.com or tribalmarketing.biz.

Now, a personal story to illustrate the core wound in action…

And on the other side we’ll talk about what the core wound is, how it works, and what happens when you escape its grasps.

My core wound, distilled down to its core, is the words, “I’m a leech.  I’m a taker.”

Subconsciously, I’ve been in reaction to this core wound my entire life, with an “inflation” response…

Meaning I’ve spent most of my life denying it…

Gaining an endless array of skills and constantly developing to be a more value filled person…

So that I could bring value to the world and “prove” my core wound wrong.

Now, when I first launched Om Marketing Group, this wound nearly destroyed the company…

I was so committed to being the first marketing company that was not a leech or a taker to its clients… the first marketing company that these people would hire that would actually get the job done right… that my business model was completely wrong.

For each new client, I was only taking a small cash advance on the project (to be paid back later from profits), with no other money coming into the project until commissions from what we had built were flowing and the project was profitable.

Essentially saying, “Look, I will leech or take nothing, deliver you the goods, and only get paid afterward. Deal?”

Great deal for my clients…and a great model in theory…

But marketing projects are not always immediately profitable and capable of generating scaling returns…

There is often a phase of tweaking and massaging the campaign before it’s ready for scale.

So as our first project went into tweaking mode and there wasn’t a windfall of commissions right away…

I had to take on another project in order to infuse cash flow into the business…

But this also stretched me thinner – and my team was almost non-existent at this point.

This happened 2, 3, 4 times…

Bring in a client, go all in, start running out of cash, bring on another client out of necessity…

Stretching me thinner, and thinner, and thinner…

And threatening my integrity with my clients – which is one of my absolute top values!

So here I am trying to be of value to my clients, but because of my wound-driven business model I’m actually being the opposite.

I’m being my wound.  Stretched so thin, I’m suddenly now being a leech and a taker…

What we try to avoid is exactly what we become.  What we resist, persists.

Now at this point, I’m sucking value from my clients because I don’t have the time to do a proper job for them all, NOR do I have the money required to hire the team necessary to do the job right.

I feel like Indiana Jones with the spike walls coming in on both sides…

But luckily a major breakthrough was on the horizon.

I flew to Boise, Idaho for Russell Brunson’s ‘Inner Circle Mastermind’ – and got to present my business to a room full of some of the smartest entrepreneurs and digital marketers on the planet.

To everyone else, the answer was OBVIOUS!

“You need to change your business model.  You’re providing so much value to your clients already.  Charge a monthly retainer before commissions are flowing and get out of the weeds.”

Seems logical now…

But at that time, my resistance was MAXIMUM. I literally stood in front of a room of 30 other people, resisting this advice, for a solid twenty minutes.

My core wound inside wanted SO BADLY to deliver on the “Ultimate Business Model” – that it was blinding me to the obvious pivot and changes I needed to make.

Luckily, after sitting with it for some time, I was able to see clearly, and make the changes.

I changed my business model… brought in the monthly retainer component, and my team grew by 9 people in just the next few months.

Our capacity to serve our clients and the results we were producing both skyrocketed…

It was an exponential growth in value delivered…

And most of our clients were happy to make the transition with us over to the new model.

And from this experience as well as many others, working heavily with my ‘core wounds’ in 2016…

I know firsthand that our core wounds will blind us…

And keep us trapped

Until we understand them, make peace with them, and integrate them.

Now, it’s important to know that everyone has a core wound.

Whether you think you grew up with a perfect childhood or not, is irrelevant…

Your core wounds come from learning to navigate the world during developmental stages and early childhood…

We made assumptions about the world and how we should act…

How we need to act to get love and acceptance…

What behavior was acceptable or not…

ALL based on the influences of our family, friends, and society.

For all of us this has created a core question, a core wound, that we’ve been in subconscious reaction to our whole lives…until we uncover it, understand it, and integrate it.

(Your core wound has massive implications in your marketing too.)

What’s most important to know, is that for creators like us…

Your core wound will block you from being in alignment with the creation itself.

What I mean is this…

Many creative entrepreneurs have the experience of “receiving a calling” or “inspired idea”…

Another way to look at this is that you’ve come into alignment with the creation you’re meant to steward into this world…your mission, your purpose, your vision.

You come into alignment with it, you resonate with it, and it downloads to you an idea…

You get the intuition of what you need to do next.

But then you go back into your wound.  You say, “Okay, thanks for the download!” and then try to use personal willpower to PUSH this creation into existence…

And however it looks for you does not matter…

Typically, though you find yourself bumping against a “glass ceiling” of lifestyle success…

A wall you can’t seem to “blast through”, crush into submission,  or navigate around (even though you keep changing your tactics, team, mentors or efforts)…

Because your wounded self is operating from its limited perspective and cutting off your connection with the co-creative SOURCE.

By being out of relationship with your intuition, guidance, or support…

Blinded by your wound pattern and its fleeting attempts to avoid the non-integrated pain or confusion from the past…

You run in circles – often for years.

It’s like a hamster wheel… You’re running full speed, but getting nowhere.

Now, when you understand your core wound, something entirely different can happen…

You can now consistently align with and be in relationship with the emerging impact you’re here to steward into the world…

The essence of what it is you’re creating…

And you can ride the slipstream of momentum, untethered by your past and no longer blinded by your core wound.

Now I understand…

Because we’re a tribe of entrepreneurs, experts, and thought leaders…

We love to pretend that we’re perfect, or that we don’t have insecurities, but the truth is:

Every single person on the planet, unless born some sort of spiritual sage, has these wounds, because we’ve all had our thinking and behavior impacted by our environment.

So why MUST an entrepreneur escape this core wound matrix?

Two main reasons.

One, if you’re a mission driven, leading edge thought leader, consultant, or practitioner with a new message for your industry and for the world…

Your core wounds are going to deeply inform your perfect marketing. That’s number one.

More importantly though…reason number two is that until you integrate your core wound, you will be forever blinded by it.

It doesn’t matter how many skills you gain or how much you’ve already accomplished…

Before working with my core wound at age thirty, I’d already built a 7 figure company, had email lists in the 10’s of thousands, reached over 5M views on YouTube channel, etc.

But if you’re operating from your core wound, there is a next level of your potential not yet being realized…

With your core wound in operation, you can only create more reinforcement for the wound… more repetition of the past.

So this is an encouragement for entrepreneurs to start looking within…

Not only because you’re going to find your most authentic marketing

But because once free of the anchors to the past, you’re now able to create your most prosperous future… and fully give unique gift that only you can give to the world.

Until you integrate and liberate your past, your life will continue to give you hints about your core wound, and deliver you opportunities to desire transformation

AKA – more problems!

You’ll continue to ram into a wall that’s always the same (though it looks different every time).

That’s why this is an essential step for growth oriented Entrepreneurs to thrive and experience TRUE prosperity…

Where your business, your health, relationships, and spiritual life are ALL in harmony and abundance.

Now if you’re a spiritual or transformational leader with mastery and a leading edge body of work to bring to the world…

These are the types of clients we work with as Platinum Partners – and as part of our kickoff intake – we’ll identify your core wound…

So we can leverage it to effectively connect you with your ideal clients…

And so you can more easily rise to new heights of success with your mission and impact.
